A Close Read of Courier Climb
We gave Courier Climb the same close-read treatment as any other story in this issue.
Courier Climb reads simply on the page, which is part of the point — the entry doesn't oversell itself, and neither does the game it describes. The pitch is one sentence, the how-to is two, and there's no padding between the two.
That restraint is deliberate. The Open Journal desk has a rule, mostly unwritten, that an entry earns exactly as much copy as it needs and not a line more. Courier Climb is a clean example of that rule working as intended — short enough to read in passing, complete enough that you know what you're getting before you click through.
Reading back through the section, that's the real test for anything that runs on Open Journal: not whether the copy is clever, but whether a reader in a hurry still walks away knowing exactly what the entry is.
